New York City’s minority population is constantly targeted by its notorious police department, as the ‘law enforcement’ agents continue to employ the so-called “stop and frisk” practices on them.
‘The 100 Blacks in Law Enforcement Who Care’ is a group of activists that has raised serious concerns about the “stop and frisk” practices of the New York Police Department (NYPD).
“Now what we see is the abuse of the stop, question and frisk policy and it’s outrageous that in 2010 we would tolerate racial profiling in New York City and the numbers are only getting worse,” said Noel Leader, founder of the advocacy group, to Press TV’s Grace Yi.
“Overwhelming majority of people say they hate police. The reason animosity exists is because of the unnecessary harassment, arrests, and even worse cases where New York Police officers engage in unnecessary contact with civilians,” he added.
The New York Civil Liberties Union maintains that “stop and frisk” practices raise serious concerns about racial profiling, illegal stops, and privacy rights.
“I think it’s a bad thing but it’s just something we have to deal with, but I wish it would stop”, said Julian McMillan, an African-American resident of New York.
There’s now a call for the New York State Attorney General to set up an independent panel to analyze the NYPD’s procedures. Activists say this problem needs to get addressed to foster better relationships between police and the people they’re supposed to protect.
“The animosity level is very high. There’s a deep-seated dislike for members of the New York City Police Department,” said Leader.
Based on estimates, the NYPD stops more than 500,000 New Yorkers each year.
Reports suggest that 88 percent of those stopped and interrogated are totally innocent. Of all the people stopped, more than half are African-American, one-third are Latinos, and only one-tenth are white.
US observers emphasize that minority citizens of most major American cities experience similar police harassment with no effort by the Federal Government to intervene or even raise concern.
This is while the US officials go out of their way to raise “human rights concerns” in many other countries and even use it as a pretext to impose sanctions on countries that do not share its world-view and regional interests.
